Music

My next big thing is music. I like lots of different styles of music, and my opinions of how to classify various artists sometimes clashes with what they are being marketed as. I see a few main genres - C&W, R&B, Rap, Rock, Pop, Classical, Jazz, Blues, Electronica, Folk, Traditional, Alternative. There is a fair bit of crossover in these groups these days, and many subgroupings exist below them. Note that I use the term Alternative in a slightly different meaning to the popular music media: alternative is something that does not fit into any of the other groups easily. Bands like Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind are not alternative; they are pop-rock bands.

I consider most of my collection to fall into the classification of Pop, with some Rock, Classical, Electronica and Alternative. I also enjoy Jazz and Blues, of which I have a few recordings.

If one wants to be a little more picky, I like Brit Pop, Guitar Pop, Goth Pop, Goth Rock, Industrial, 80's Pop, Ethereal, Shoegazer, Rave, Traditional-based Alternative, Angst Rock, Ambient, Synth Pop.

September 30, 2008 20:00	Tegan and Sara	Fairly entertaining Canadian indie-chicks. The politicking got a little annoying.
September 24, 2008 20:00	Gogol Bordello	Awesome show, full of enery. These guys were all over the place and just kept on going.
September 15, 2008 20:00	Mogwai	Brilliant show, very loud, twisting and turning melodies and noise.
May 17, 2008 14:00	EstoriaFest	A bunch of bands playing at Estoria. Very cool. Highlights included Rizzudo, and the Liverhearts.
November 16, 2007 21:00	Standard 8	Lenny's. My friend Owen's band. Very fun.
July 14, 2007 13:00	Pitchfork Music Festival	Union Park. Lots of good music.
July 13, 2007 18:30	Slint - Sonic Youth	Union Park. Awesome. Slint were really good, and Sonic Youth were simply brilliant
June 24, 2007 22:00	Deerhunter	Drunken Unicorn. Good stuff. Loud. Distorted. Loud.
June 07, 2007 20:00	Black Rebel Motorcycle Club	Roxy. Awesome show. Thay played for two hours and took requests at the end. Loud, distorted, lovely.
May 31, 2007 20:00	Bloc Party	Tabernacle. More or less alternating between new and old tracks, this was a good show.
May 25, 2007 20:00	Shiny Toy Guns	Loft. Didn't make it.
May 22, 2007 22:00	Pretty Girls Make Graves	EARL. Lots of fun. The warm-up bands were also good. PGMG put on a great farewell set.
May 19, 2007 20:00	Artcic Monkeys	Tabernacle. A great show, if short. They didn't play Vampires but did play everything else I wanted to hear.
April 27, 2007 22:00	Drive By Truckers	Georgia Theatre, I was in Athens for work and Jon VW had tickets. This was an accoustic show, and it impressed me a lot. I really enjoyed it (but that didn't surprise me a whole lot).
April 22, 2007 20:00	The Killers	Fox Theatre. Absolutely brilliant. All the good stuff from the old album, which I danced a lot to. Lots from the new album, which I don't really know, but did enjoy. And the surprise play which I bounced around exuberantly flor - Joy Division's Shadowplay
March 13, 2007 21:00	can't remember	Masquerade. Amy invited me to check out some localish bands. All pretty derivative, modern rock stuff. A couple of the musicians showed talent.
February 03, 2007 20:30	Yo La Tengo	Variety Playhouse. Wow. Simply "wow." From the delicate nuances and subtle melodies in their slower and gentler pieces through to the full-on aural assault of their bigger songs (still not devoid of intricacies) this was a feast for the ears. They played no less than three encores and could have stopped after the first and I would have felt that I had received my money's worth.
